Purpose of Collective Worship 

The daily act of Collective Worship is a distinct time of gathering for the whole school community which is an integral and important part of school life.  Within our Collective Worships we promote the Christian values which permeate the ethos of the schools. 

The aim of Collective Worship is to provide the opportunity for pupils to: 

• Reflect on the significant features of human life 

• To explore our responses to the world in which we live, developing a sense of awe and wonder. 

• To learn about the Christian beliefs and traditions upon which our society is based. 

• To enable us to better understand and appreciate the religious beliefs of others 

• To enable us to develop our own response to the spiritual side of life. 

• Develop a community spirit, a common ethos and shared values within the school vision 

• Consider spiritual and moral issues 

• Respond to the Worship offered 

• Pray or have time to think about things that matter to them 

• Celebrate! 

The Statutory Duty of the School 

The school provides daily Collective Worship for all registered pupils (unless withdrawn at parental request as allowed by law).   

The Headteacher is responsible for arranging the daily Collective Worship in consultation with the Governing body. 

Collective Worship must be wholly or mainly of a broadly of a Christian character, and is in accordance with the Derby Diocese guidelines, Section 48 inspection findings and the RE agreed syllabus. 

Planning 

The themes for Collective Worship are taken from ‘Roots and Fruits’ and ‘Values for Life’ and change each half term.  One Worship per week will be delivered using ‘Picture News’ and allows children to consider their global neighbours. 

The themes for academic year 2020-2021 are: 

Autumn 1 – Hope 

Autumn 2 – Wisdom 

Spring 1 – Community 

Spring 2 - Joy 

Summer 1 – Dignity 

Summer 2 - Peace 

Implementation 

Collective Worship is held on a daily basis, lasting for 20 minutes. 

The organisation of Collective Worship may change occasionally due to special events but currently is organised in this way: 

Monday – Worship based on the values theme. 

Tuesday – Worship based on the values theme. 

Wednesday – Worship based on the values theme.  

Thursday – Worship based on global themes and issues. 

Friday – Celebration Collective Worship (including behaviour certificates based on Values for Life, celebration of academic/non-academic success). 

A number of different visitors, including the local incumbents and students from Theological College, may also lead Collective Worship at church or in school.
